What decides if a film gets released in theaters?

Is there extra money involved in the process if a production company wants their film in theaters or what? I ask because of the abundance of films that don’t get to the big screen, some of them very good, and the many that do get a big release – and stink.

There is extra expense involved to distribute a feature motion-picture to the general public. The cost of prints and marketing alone can run into the millions of dollars.

Hundreds of movies are released each year so major studios compete for prime release dates that can help crucial opening weekend box-office receipts. Incredible sums of money are spent on marketing to help ensure that interest is high enough to get butts in the seats. If a smaller, less funded, movie tries to compete with the "tent-pole" features that have millions of dollars in advertising funds, it will likely get lost in the shuffle.

As far as what gets released and what doesn’t, in most cases, a studio or production company will not invest its time and money into a project without doing everything it can to improve the odds of making money. They do this by employing A and/or B List Actors and/or top Directors who have proven track records to bring in a quality product. Once those decisions are made, they come with an inherent upfront cost so the choice to spend the money it takes to have a theatrical release is built-in. They HAVE TO have a wide-release in order to earn back the expenses it takes to produce the movie. And because it is a theatrical release, they HAVE TO spend a significant amount of marketing money on top of everything else, so that means the movie has to do that much better to be considered a success.

Smaller films, that may have better stories, can’t compete with this system particularly if they do not have a built-in attraction, like an A-List Actor. People like their movie-stars and are less likely to see a film if it doesn’t have a recognizable name in it. Therefore, movies without movie-stars or large scale action are not likely to be seen in great enough numbers to justify spending the money for a theatrical run.

Also keep in mind that nobody sets out to make a bad movie. Truly. Movies cost far too much money for someone to risk their career just so they can make a "bad" movie. What generally happens is that a good or great script is slowly turned into a "mediocre" project for a variety of reasons. Those factors could be just a lack of adequate budget to get the locations or talent (on screen and off) needed to really do the script justice. Or maybe there is enough money, but someone’s ego gets in the way…perhaps an Actor feels that he/she should have a bigger part or should play the character in a different way than is on the page..or the Director tries to impose his "vision" upon a script when that "vision" is just wrong for that story… or a Studio Executive decides that he needs to justify his job so he begins delivering "notes" that negatively impact the project. Any number of things can conspire to make an otherwise great movie a bad one, BUT nobody ever starts the process with the intention of making a bad movie. By the time the damage is done, it is too late to stop the machine, so a "bad" movie can get a major theatrical release while otherwise "better" ones get lost because they didn’t have the money or talent to begin with.

What vid camera is best for theaters and live music. I want to have the option of plugging into a sound board?

The music is loud and the lighting changes. The theaters are all sizes. These are rock concerts.

You want a camera with XLR inputs that can be swiched between mic level and line level (line level for the sound-desk)

Any of Sonys pro cameras from the A1 to the Z series up.
Canon do the XHA1 too.

You can get a less expensive camera with a mic input and manual level adjust, such as the canon HV40 you would need to use this with a beachteck DXA-2 adaptor, again switched to line level, to get the audio from a soundboard.

When does that movie called Management starring Jennifer Aniston come into theaters or has it already?

Is it already in theaters or when does it go into theaters?
If u have seen it, is it good?

It had a limited release in theatres on May 15, but it was met with a lukewarm reception at the box office and from critics, so it was pulled from theatres. It will be released on DVD on September 29.

I haven’t seen the movie, but I’ll probably rent it when it comes out on DVD.

Are there any movie theaters in Chicago that play old movies?

In movies and things, I always see people going to theaters that are playing classic movies, and I mean anything that came out in the 80s or earlier! I’ve tried looking it up and haven’t found much of anything. I live in Chicago, and being such a huge city, I figure there has got to be one theater that does this, even if it’s just on Saturday nights or something! Does anyone know of any?

The Siskel Film Center at the Art Institute of Chicago does old films, independent film, etc. It’s on State Street just down from the big Marshall Fields (Or I guess it’s Macy’s now.) You can buy tickets for individual movies or become a member and get reduced price tickets and invites to special screenings and events.

How to get your movie played at local movie Theaters ?

Also once you do that how do you make money off the theaters for showing your movie + sales. Like these featured films how do they make money they have their movie in 3,000 plus theaters but how do the sales/revenue of their movie get sent to them etc ?

You have considerably different questions and each has different answers. But it sounds more like you have a film and want to get it screened and, ideally, want to make money.

Working in reverse… if you have a film and it is done, you can submit it to film distributors or film festivals. Check out withoutabox.com which lists many festivals, their entry costs and other requirements. If you submit, distributors may see your work and contact you. Or contact distributors directly, but they will most likely not likely be too interested if you are an unknown or have no one in it they can sell… so the festival route is better.

if you get a distributor, you get a percentage of what they sell to video stores, theaters, amazon, etc… after they deduct their marketing and other costs. Sometimes you also get an advance.

Often, after you made a movie or two, you make your money out of teh budget of teh film to make the movie.

Your other questions – getting your film in a local theater. 1) you pay the theater to show your film. You essentially rent it out. You usually do this to show your film to get exposure. You may then negogiate getting the ticket sales and a piece of the concession sales. You also have to convert you film to a 35mm print or digital media they can project – it ain’t cheap. 2) You show them the film and they love it and they screen it for you (not too likely). you will still have to get them a print.

It is tough to do when starting out – you may have better luck at film festivals or making and selling DVDs and seeing if interest is generated.

What Theaters are showing the New Death Note Movie playing?

On the 15 and 16 there is going to be a Death Note movie playing. Does anyone know where i can find a list of the theaters it’s playing at?

I have a feeling you might be talking about the Death Note 2 The Last Note (English dub) "special showing"s. Because In my area, on the 15th and 16th, Regal Cinemas will be playing it!
If you have Regals where you are, go to their website http://www.fandango.com/movies/1/movieoverview.aspx?mid=118531&wssac=58&wssaffid=11481_REGWebsite , or any other website you can usually find movie listings. It is listed just like any other movie (though clearly it is not, it’s awesome I can’t wait!)
I hope you can find the times in your area and go! We must all band together and show them there are lots of people who love Death Note! = )
