Angelina Jolie stars in Salt, a contemporary action thriller from Columbia Pictures.
As a CIA officer, Evelyn Salt (Jolie) swore an oath to duty, honor and country. Her loyalty will be tested when a defector accuses her of being a Russian spy. Brief Applause: Baldwin Wallace Musical Theater

For many, the dream of starring on Broadway is just that – a dream. But thanks to a local theater maven, a number of her students are living that dream along the Great White Way. For more than a decade, Victoria Bussert has led the musical theater program at Baldwin Wallace College that’s considered the Midwest training ground for Broadway talent. However, you don’t need to travel to the Big Apple to catch these rising stars, as Vicky showcases their talent not only in Berea, but throughout the Greater Cleveland area.

Los Angeles Acting School Online Lecture #3 – The Fundamentals

http://www.LosAngeles-acting-School.com

Below is the full text of this short lecture:

THE FUNDAMENTALS OF ACTING

ACTING IS ONE OF THE MOST COMPETITIVE PROFESSIONS IN THE WORLD. IN LOS ANGELES THERE ARE 500,000 ACTORS. THE MOST TALENTED, AND THE LEAST TALENTED, ACTORS ON EARTH ARRIVE IN TOWN EVERY DAY TO ‘GIVE IT A SHOT.’ YOU CAN EITHER COMPETE WITH ALL OF THEM OR YOU CAN COMPETE ONLY WITH THE OTHER, ONE OR TWO, WHO LOOK LIKE YOU, AND CAN REALLY ACT. THAT’S YOUR COMPETITION.

ACTING IS A GAME OF PERMISSION. THE ACTING GAME IS A TEAM SPORT … IT TAKES PLACE BETWEEN YOU AND YOUR PARTNER. THE PERMISSION COMES IN THREE PARTS: YOU PERMIT YOURSELF TO SEE AND HEAR WHAT YOUR PARTNER IS GOING THROUGH BEHAVIORALLY, AND EMOTIONALLY. YOU PERMIT WHAT YOU SEE AND HEAR TO AFFECT YOU EMOTIONALLY. THEN YOU PERMIT YOUR INSTINCTUAL BEHAVIORAL, EMOTIONAL, RESPONSE. YOU DO THIS EVERY MOMENT – MOMENT TO UNANTICIPATED MOMENT. YOU HAVE TO PRACTICE THIS UNTIL YOU HAVE A FUNDAMENTAL WAY OF FUNCTIONING WHEN YOU ACT THAT IS ROOTED IN YOUR INSTINCTS AND TALENT.

THE TALENT OF THE ACTOR IS THE ABILITY TO BE AFFECTED EMOTIONALLY BY EXTERNAL CONDITIONS. YOUR INSTINCTUAL RESPONSE IS THE ONE THAT HAPPENS TO YOU WITHOUT THINKING. THAT’S WHAT THE CAMERA CAPTURES. THOSE LITTLE PASSIVE INDICATORS OF EMOTION THAT ARE EXPRESSED IN 1/40TH OF A SECOND THAT EVERY OTHER HUMAN IS GENETICALLY PREDISPOSED TO RECOGNIZE. THE ACTOR CANNOT FAKE OR FORCE THOSE RESPONSES BUT YOU CAN CONDITION YOURSELF TO PERMIT THEM IF THAT’S THE WAY YOU TRAIN.

LEARNING TO KEEP YOUR ATTENTION ON YOUR PARTNER KEEPS YOU FROM BEING SELF-CONSCIOUS. IN THIS STATE YOU CAN RESPOND INSTINCTUALLY, WITHOUT JUDGEMENT, ANALYSIS, OR HOLDING BACK. IT TAKES TRAINING TO PERMIT YOURSELF TO TAKE EVERYTHING PERSONALLY, TO ALLOW YOURSELF TO BECOME GENUINELY EMOTIONAL (EVEN THOUGH YOUR SITUATION IS IMAGINARY), THEN TO RESPOND INSTINCTUALLY, WITHOUT THINKING, AND TO DO THOSE THINGS ONLY WHEN YOU ACT.

CULTIVATING YOUR TALENT, YOUR SENSITIVITY, YOUR RANGE AND DEPTH OF EMOTIONAL EXPRESSION, YOUR INSTINCTUAL RESPONSIVENESS, AS WELL AS YOUR IMAGINATION AND CREATIVITY, IS A COMPLEX ORDER. WHAT’S DEMANDED IS A REPEATABLE, PROGRESSIVE, EXERCISE THAT PLACES HIGH DEMANDS ON THOSE SPECIFIC ELEMENTS. THEN YOU NEED DAILY PRACTICE. CLOSELY SUPERVISED PRACTICE THAT OFFERS CORRECTION.

THIS IS THE APPROACH TO TRAINING AT L.A. ACT. TO SUCCEED IN ACTING AS A PROFESSION DEMANDS PREPARATION AND LUCK. THE BETTER PREPARED YOU ARE THE GREATER YOUR CHANCES OF GAINING FULL ADVANTAGE OF A LUCKY BREAK.

FOR L.A. ACT, I’M YOUR TEACHER JOSEPH DEAN COBURN, THANK YOU.
