How do I start my acting/musical theater career??
I’m only in high school, but I’m planning on majoring in musical theater. I’m involved either backstage or onstage in all my school’s productions, but I’d like tips on what I can do to improve my acting resume/ what I can do to possibly start a career in it. (PLEASE only leave an answer if it’s a useful one!!) Thank you!
Audition. Everywhere you can…all the time. Get your name out there. Take lots of dance classes and get voice lessons, if you haven’t already. Don’t only stay at one theatre…try to do shows in a variety of places.
Get contacts, make friends. Don’t burn ANY bridges behind you (lots of people learn this the hard way!) You never know how many people will show up again and again from past shows you’ve done with them. So if you hate a director or fellow actor…keep it to yourself! Even one comment can come back to haunt you later if that person is now in a CASTING position! Keep up with your high school choir director, dance teachers, friends in shows, etc.
Keep going, don’t give up. You have to do this for years and years and really love it before it becomes a career. If you want to get your equity card, do auditions for equity shows and get your points…but keep doing community theatre until you get your equity card. It is good experience.
Have fun! If being onstage makes you light up and feel like you are really alive…people will notice! It takes years to become an actor. But if you love doing it…it will all be a growing time! Never feel like you’ve "arrived"…have an attitude that is teachable, and keep learning things and always thinking how you can improve your performance. Think of small details about how you can be better as a performer!
Where do I get movies to show at a movie theater?
A local movie theater has closed down, and I was wondering where do theaters get their movies from. I have heard the usual, from the producers, I am looking for a website, or a catalog. I want to show old movies, even the original reel to reel ones if possible. Where do I get the actual movie, and the permission to show it?
back when i was in college in the early 80’s, i saw catalogs from companies that rented movies – look in google for "movies theater rental" or something similar. The companies would be called movie "distributors" I guess
should i take music and drama or music then go to drama school afterwards?
i dont know if ishould take both music and drama at the same time and go to one uni or study music at uni then go to drama school afterwards. any advice?
Can you double major? Or perhaps take one major and then take lots of classes of the other as electives. I wouldn’t suggest both, I don’t think a second would increase any job opportunities and will be expensive. I say major in the one you want to pursue after college more, then get a minor in the other subject.
How can I download a drama and load it onto a DVD?
Is it possible to download a drama series from the internet and load the episodes onto a DVD? If so, then how? I’ve never downloaded any drama episodes before – usually I just watch it straight on a streaming site. So, please explain in layman’s terms X) Your help is much appreciated. Thank you ^^ !
Yeah, not a problem.
What you must do is convert the files to video DVD format, which is MPEG2 video, MPEG2 or AC3 audio and any number of subpicture streams.
If you’ve got the raws via Share/Winny/Perfect Dark, etc, then you don’t have any subtitles. The file would most likely be encoded using DivX/XviD. Also, if you got the file(s) from D-addicts, then it’s probably just a torrent version of something from Share, so it’s going to be in the same basic format (no subs, DivX/Xvid). If this is the case, skip the following paragraph. If you have hardsubbed files, then you should also skip the next paragraph.
If you have softsubs (Matroska container, perhaps?) then you must demux all streams before proceeding. In other words, you need to `separate` the video, audio and subpicture streams. Grab mkvtoolnix ( http://bunkus.org/videotools/mkvtoolnix/ ) and this GUI for mkvextract ( http://coreforge.org/frs/?group_id=33 ) to demux. If you want to burn the subtitles too, then you’ll need to convert them to SRT. You need to use OCR for this, so get a copy of subrip: http://www.divx-digest.com/software/subrip.html
Note, that the GUI is, of course, optional, but I assumed that you would prefer it.
Now, once you’ve demuxed all streams, it’s time to encode the DVD. This is the easy part. Get all your finished files together (demuxed autio and video streams and your OCR’ed SRT subs) and put them in one directory. You don’t actually have to do this, but it will help avoid clutter.
You could do the encoding yourself, if you want, step by step, but I’m not going to walk you through this, since there’s a much easier way and it will save me a lot of typing and you a lot of time.
Unless you’re a professional DVD producer or have OCD like me, you’re not going to need to encode your own MPEG2, nor is there any use for me to explain to you about VOB containers. That would be a waste of your time.
Instead, you can simply use freeware to create the DVD for you while you sleep, go to work/school, take a walk, etc…
My favourite is FAVC: http://favcfavc.googlepages.com/
FAVC will:
Take your video(s), regardless of what format they’re in and transcode them to MPEG2 video and audio for you
It will create an ISO image for you if you want, so that you can burn the DVD at a alter time, or it can burn the VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS folders to disc immediately
It can do PAL, SECAM, NTSC, crop, resize, combine multiple audio and subpicture streams, etc…
The best part, however, is that you don’t actually have to do anything. Just open your file(s) in FAVC, click "Generate DVD" and leave it alone for some hours. When you come back, the DVD will be ready to burn.
EDIT: Just to clarify, you must make sure that when you extract the GUI for mkvextract, you extract the files to the same directory as the actual mkvextract binary.
EDIT2: Heh, I just noticed your username. You and I seem to have the same taste in…entertainment.
Classical Indian dance classes – what are the best Indian classical dance gurus and schools?
I am looking for good classical Indian dance (preferably Bharatanatyam) lessons in India. The style should be traditional and pretty sophisticated (that is, no Kalakshetra) and make use of Karanas and other margi elements (but not not Bharatanrithyam). I am looking for a small to medium size Indian classical dance school with many good students, where the dance gurus are not greedy but pretty liberal (or even generous) and do not create problems over the audio or video records issues.
Since you are focussed on Bharatanatyam, I were you I would first of all read very very carefully the articles on http://bharatanatyam2dance.wordpress.com/ .
There you will find a ton of information on dozens of classical Indian dance schools and dancers (mostly in Chennai), their teaching methods and the other details.

How can I start my acting career?
I am 13 and just ending a play at the local theatre. In total I have done 5 plays and 2 musicals over 2 years and my school has an acting class. I want to try auditioning for films or tv but I don’t know if I should take acting classes (outside of school) or if what I’ve done is enough to get an agent already.
When you are as young as you are it is best to stick with the stage. The film and TV world is complicated and if you pay close attention you’ll find that all child stars end up jaded and living misdirected lives in the long run. Wait until your of age and in the meantime be a good student on how to get things done. I would move to LA and hook up with central casting to begin with http://www.centralcasting.org/. They will cast you in extra roles and you can see how that world works. You will also need good headshots to shop yourself around. This was one of the more difficult choices for me when I moved here because there are so many of them. Use these guys http://www.hollywoodmodelphotography.com
Just be patient keep a positive attitude and do the right thing at the right time. You’ll make it.
